Winter Is Here
If you haven't stepped outside, this is definitely breaking news...
Say goodbye to the warm temperatures we’ve had as the December chill is here, with lots of indications everywhere that we are staring down a pretty prolonged period of more cold than not temperatures throughout this month.
1. Quick Hitting Winter System
Summary: Models are /throwing out a few inches of snow for parts of SE CO into Kansas, with some light freezing/frozen precipitation possible for parts of Oklahoma. Expect at least some minor travel impacts from this system.
Intel Breakdown:
Impact Zone: SE Colorado, Kansas, and Northern Oklahoma.
Timing: Late tonight into tomorrow afternoon.
Hazards: Expect some light to moderate snow accumulations of 2-4 inches across portions of Kansas. Further south, there may be a light glazing of ice on some elevated surfaces (especially bridges).
Travel Impacts: Be sure to check local conditions before heading out tomorrow morning, as there will be some travel impacts in the region.
Brutally Cold: Low temps in the lower teens to lower twenties are likely for many areas tonight. Take care of your pets and plants!
2. The December Chill
The Lowdown: Models have been pretty insistent on a rather cold December this year, with big-picture indications showing the shot we’re experiencing right now as only the first of a few major shots of arctic air.
Reality Check - It’ll Be Bouncy: Not every day will be brutally cold, but a colder-than-average month means there will be more of those types of days than we would usually expect.
White Christmas? Let’s face it, everyone’s dreaming of one unless you have to travel, of course. If current trend lines hold, we may have more White Christmases this year across the country than we’ve seen. But this is a low-confidence take.
3. The Latest From the Field
We were actually out and about in Oklahoma last week. Being home for Thanksgiving for once and also having some very local storms led to a pretty cool lightning show. Check out the video below (or just click this link).
Also, if you didn’t see it, we posted a new episode of our 2025 chase series focused on the early-day action of the May 18, 2025, tornado outbreak, which occurred across NW OK and W KS.
We’ll see you next time! Be sure to share this post to help us get to 6,500 subscribers by the end of the year!
