Winter is here, winter is ever present, winter is a state of mind.
Or something.
Regardless, as I type this, if you live in the United States you are likely dealing with some of the coldest temperatures you will feel all winter as an arctic airmass settles in all the way through the Gulf Coast.
Yeah, it’s that cold everywhere.
The upper air pattern that brought this arctic airmass by opening up the gates of doom won’t change much through the week, so despite some modification (warming) of this airmass over time, we should see widespread below normal temperatures throughout much of the country this next week.
The 500mb chart for Thursday looks not that unlike the chart right now. However…
By the weekend things should change with more of a western U.S. trough setting up.
But don’t expect much for a bit after this initial system early this week swings through. Models are pretty insistent that the Gulf of Mexico is closed for business. I don’t think severe weather is in the cards much of the next week, and possibly through the rest of this month and into early February.
The most interesting weather event of the next week is the potential for a real snowstorm along the Gulf Coast into tomorrow. Many of these areas haven’t had measureable snow in a span that reaches decades. Thus, this is a pretty weird weather event that won’t happen often. Even a small amount of snow in these places will be quite rough for travelers as most of these areas haven't little/no experience in snow removal.
Enjoy the snow days is my best advice, as they don't come often!
The Beating Heart of a Supercell
The mesocyclone is the beating heart of a supercell. Everything that happens flows through this impressive, one-of-a-kind weather feature. Our latest video breaks the mesocyclone down and gives some interesting facts along the way.
Paid Tier Coming Soon
We are finally ready to launch the paid tier of this newsletter, with pressure from our gracious hosts Substack to finally give it a try. Anyone with existing pledges will be charged when we ‘flip the switch’. As we’ve said in the past, if you are not feeling up to paying, make sure you cancel your pledge before February 1. Financial situations change and we completely understand. We will outline the paid tier in a later e-mail.
