Raw and uncut: Funnel cloud reaching to the earth and becoming a tornado in Colorado. This is how this process evolves in real-time, and its just as mesmerizing every single time it happens. At this point in the process, the pressure is quickly lowering underneath the mesocyclone as it ingests vorticity into the parent updraft. As the storm takes that spin near the surface and stretches and tilts it upwards — the process of bringing the mesocyclone to the surface is well underway. We always go by the general rule that if a funnel is halfway to the surface, it is probably in contact with a ground circulation underneath. I’m a firm believer there is no one single way for a storm to make a tornado, but with supercells the process always rhymes.
