I am a firm believer that there are some very essential items that will set my storm chases up for the ultimate success. You will want to make sure you have a reliable car, a good camera and source of data, extra layers, sunscreen, and paper maps.

Why this matters: One of the most frequently asked questions we get in our comments sections or e-mail inboxes is “what do I need to start storm chasing?” This video goes over all of the items I consider to be essential for successful storm chases. While others’ lists may differ a bit, I feel really good about mine (I’m biased of course!).

Level up: There are an endless variety of gear you can buy to storm chase with but I am a firm believer that the more things you have, the more screens you add, the less time you’ll spend doing the most essential and best part of storm chasing: looking at the storm! You can look at pictures of storms in your spare time, but there’s a raging supercell just out the window!

Safety first: Storm chasing is incredibly dangerous. If you do it without any training or knowledge, you risk personal injury or ruining that nice car you have. I’m serious, it’s not a great look to roll into work the Monday after your first chase with no windows and a moon-cratered car that smells of wet storm chaser and soggy Cheetos. Don’t try this at home without really doing all of your research.
