Super, Amazing, Incr…Yeah They Were Almost Severe Rain Showers in Oklahoma – February 19, 2018

So the first ‘storm’ chase of 2018 is in the bag. The SPC issued a marginal risk for parts of the Southern Plains and that was enough to get me out the door on the hunt for storms.

(In reality the TV Station decided today was a good day to go chasing but that’s neither here nor there)

I intercepted some extremely aggressive rain showers near Wynnewood, Oklahoma — which threatened to cause just enough pooling on the roadways to perhaps cause some hydroplaning if you weren’t too careful. This storm also managed to briefly drop hail that was approximately BB sized, or mice sized golfballs if you prefer. This storm did actually go severe warned briefly after it sped away from me at 70mph.

Afterwards it was a jaunt west of OKC in the dark where some lightning was spotted along with heavy rain. These were quite a bit weaker as they were crossing over into the cold air and dying pretty rapidly. Still, there was plenty of thunder heard and I did miss thunder.

In all seriousness, it wasn’t a bad way to get out of the house and break up the routine and test out some ideas for 2018. Not sure when the next chase will be but it was good to get back into the swing of things, even if just for thundershowers.
