Inflow vs. Outflow

0 1

Today we are taking another basic look at storm structure, behavior, and anatomy. We oftentimes talk about inflow and outflow in our posts on social media, but we have yet to take the time to explain them. Here’s a basic description.
Outflow is when a storm blows winds out and away from itself — typically from the storm core. This air is generally cool and stable vs. the hot/humid air the storm is breathing in. In short, outflow is like a storm blowing out.

Inflow is when a storm ‘sucks in’ the unstable air around. When a storm does this, it takes unstable air and lifts it vertical allowing it to live.

When it comes to tornado potential, inflow is what we look for primarily, especially in the lower levels of a storm. Outflow plays a role, but only after a storm’s inflow region becomes well established.

The very strongest storms have a balance of inflow and outflow which allows them to live for up to several hours. When a storm is fully outflow dominant with no inflow present, it is well on its way to dying.
