When it comes to watching storm towers, there’s a lot you can glean from the clouds’ visual appearance to cue you into what’s going to happen well before radar ever lets you know.

There are visual cues you can look towards to ensure you know exactly what a storm tower is going to do in the next few minutes. 

Towers that are hard and crisp will tend to keep growing will towers that are becoming softer are likely facing some resistance to growth in the atmosphere (think subsidence, dryness or capping as a likely cause).
