Do Hills or Rivers Protect You From Tornadoes?

0 129

This is a popular myth that everyone has a version of. It always goes something like this:

“My town is in a little valley and tornadoes pass right over us”
“Tornadoes don’t cross the river into town, we’re protected”
“The Mountain keeps tornadoes away”
“We’re protected by an ancient Indian curse”

This video dives into those myths to answer, once and for all…does any of that actually matter?

The Unfortunate Truth

The unfortunate thing is that many of these myths have caused actual fatalities in the path by causing real inaction as a tornado storm bore down on towns. It seems crazy, but people tend to be married to these myths and are willing to take them (literally) to the grave.

The only thing protecting you or your town from tornadoes is a two sided coin of hard statistical reality (tornadoes hitting any one place is a rare event indeed) and sheer dumb luck of not being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
